Veneers

Chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance and cause you to hide your smile. At Dental Group South, Inc., in Stockbridge, GA, Dr. Vernon Greene offers porcelain veneers to conceal a wide range of cosmetic flaws. Why should you enhance your smile with dental veneers at our Atlanta-area practice?

How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?

A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell that fits over the front of a tooth. A small amount of tooth enamel is removed to accommodate the dental veneer and achieve a natural appearance. Usually just 1/2 mm of enamel is removed, which is roughly the thickness of your fingernail.

With a dental veneer in place, cosmetic flaws are totally concealed. The color-matched porcelain is so convincing that it blends in with your natural teeth and looks completely natural.

Let's explore the veneers placement process...

Do You Qualify for Porcelain Veneers?

Sufficient Enamel

Before traditional veneers are placed, a small amount of enamel must be removed to achieve a natural appearance, so patients with very worn or thin enamel might not be eligible. Those patients can ask about minimal and no-prep veneers, such as Lumineers®.

No Teeth Grinding

The clenching and grinding that characterizes bruxism can fracture porcelain. Patients can often protect their veneers with oral appliances. In other cases, your dentist might recommend resolving the issue before placing veneers.

Only Minor Misalignment

While veneers can conceal small gaps and minor misalignment, severely crooked teeth might require orthodontic treatment for the best results. Dr. Greene can assess which treatment option is right for your needs during your visit.

Prepared for a Permanent Change

Veneers require permanent modifications to your teeth. This means that any teeth treated with veneers will always require some sort of restoration in the future. Minimal-prep veneers can provide a reversible alternative for candidates that qualify.

Natural-Looking Enhancement

Stains and other damage compromised the appearance of this patient's teeth.

Veneers provided a stunning rejuvenation by concealing these concerns.

Are Porcelain Veneers Painful?

/

No. Local anesthetic is used to maintain your comfort as we prep your tooth for a dental veneer. Patients report little or no discomfort during the treatment process.

The Dental Veneers Treatment Timeline

In just two visits to the dentist over the course of two weeks, you can give your smile a dramatic makeover.

Let's walk you through the veneer procedure:

In just two visits to the dentist over the course of two weeks, you can give your smile a dramatic makeover.

Consultation

During your initial consultation at our Stockbridge dental practice, Dr. Greene will conduct a thorough evaluation of your teeth, learn about your cosmetic goals, and determine if veneers are right for you. We can also discuss alternative treatments such as dental bonding or crowns so you can make the most educated decision for yourself.

Preparation

To begin the treatment process, our dentist will carefully remove a small amount of enamel from the surface of each treated tooth. This ensures the veneers can lay flat on the teeth for a natural look.

Impressions and Temporary Veneers

Once each treated tooth is prepped, our dentist will take impressions of your teeth to send to a trusted off-site dental lab. We will then place temporary dental veneers, which will be worn until your final restorations are ready for placement.

Fabrication

Dental technicians will use the impressions of your bite to create your porcelain veneers at an off-site dental lab. We have a great relationship with our lab and can ensure fully customized results for each patient.

Placement

After about two weeks, you'll return to our office for placement. Dr. Greene will remove the temporary veneers and assess your final veneers for proper fit and aesthetics. If you are happy with the appearance, Dr. Greene will permanently bond the veneers to your teeth using specialized dental cement.

Final Results

You can immediately enjoy all the benefits of your new smile. We will provide maintenance instructions to help your veneers last as long as possible. You must practice good oral hygiene and stay on top of your routine dental visits for the best results.

Can Dental Veneers Fall Off?

/

Even though porcelain veneers are carefully cemented in place, they can become dislodged. This is often the result of trauma to the mouth, teeth grinding, or severe wear and tear. If one of your dental veneers has come loose, Dr. Greene can help secure it back in place like new.

How To Protect Your New Smile

Bad Habits to Avoid

Bad Habits to Avoid

Based on the aftercare tips above, you'll notice that you can care for veneers just like your natural teeth. That's why you will need to avoid the following bad habits:

  • Chewing on ice
  • Opening packages with your teeth
  • Biting your fingernails
  • Chewing on pens or other objects

By practicing good hygiene and avoiding these bad habits, you can extend the life of your porcelain veneers and avoid damage to your natural teeth.

Protective Mouthpieces

Crown

If you play contact sports or grind your teeth, our dentist can provide a customized mouthguard to protect your new smile.

  • A night guard for teeth grinding prevents direct contact between your upper and lower teeth, protecting dental veneers and natural tooth structure from harm.
  • An athletic mouth guard protects your teeth, gums, and dental work from physical trauma while playing football, basketball, hockey, soccer, and other sports.
